American Society for Training & Development Honors Franchisor for Redesigned Training and Development Curriculum
SAN DIEGO, Jan. 28, 2008 – Mail Boxes Etc., Inc. (MBE), franchisor of The UPS Store and Mail Boxes Etc. brands, recently received the American Society for Training & Development’s PEAK (Performance Excellence and Applied Knowledge) Performance Award for 2007. The award, which was presented by the San Diego ASTD chapter, recognized the organization for its innovative New Franchisee Development Program.
In 2006, MBE redesigned its training and development program for new franchisees. The company started by taking a closer look at the skill level and business experience of its new franchisees. MBE then set about to help franchisees open their centers equipped with more in-depth knowledge, skills and abilities to achieve their business goals.
"Changing a training program that was in place for 10 years was a major undertaking from multiple angles, financial and logistical included," said Stuart Mathis, president of MBE. "This was a companywide effort that included all departments. From operations to marketing, public relations to franchise services, their respective contributions represent MBE’s total commitment to the learning process."
The New Franchisee Development Program encompasses a blended, multi-platform approach to learning, including on-the-job training, classroom-based training and online courses. Such an approach gives participants opportunities to learn across multiple media and allows instructors to present material through both practical and didactic means.
"The display of creative and impact-driven training and development interventions was impressive and a testament to our industry professionals in San Diego," said Donna York, co-chair of the 2007 PEAK Performance Awards Committee.
"While many factors influence how well a new center performs, the fact that new franchisees liked the training, demonstrated knowledge of the content and told us they applied the acquired knowledge and skills to their centers demonstrates a strong correlation to program effectiveness and improved first-year performance," said Ina Federal, manager of training and development for MBE.
Though still relatively recent, the New Franchisee Development Program has already received praise from students. MBE hopes to see continued improvement in its retention rates and sales figures for new franchisees.
